On May 25, the “Chunli Sunshine Project” in Henan Province, which was established by China Charity Federation and aims to provide medical assistance to poor patients for joint replacement, was officially launched, and Henan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Henan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, became the only designated hospital in Henan Province. The official launch of this project will give new hope to the poor patients who need joint replacement. Sun Yongqiang, director of the Orthopaedic Treatment Center of Henan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said that artificial joint replacement is one of the most important advances made in the field of orthopaedic surgery in the 20th century. It can restore joint function, greatly improve the quality of life, so that patients who used to rely on crutches, or even amputation, can walk like normal people. The procedure is now very sophisticated. However, the cost of artificial joint replacement is too expensive for poor families to afford, and many patients lose their ability to work, adding to their already difficult lives. The “Chunli Sunshine Project” charity project of Henan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine provides a total of 5 million yuan worth of artificial joint products over 5 years to help poor orthopedic patients to replace their artificial joints. At the same time, the project also selects hospitals with high level of joint replacement technology and experience as the designated hospitals for the project. Henan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, with its high influence, excellent technology of joint replacement and good public reputation, was identified as the only hospital in China for the Chunli Sunshine Project. Henan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Henan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, is the national clinical key specialty construction unit of the Ministry of Health, the key specialty of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the first famous department of traditional Chinese medicine in Henan Province, the clinical teaching base of the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the clinical research base of the Institute of Rheumatism of Henan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the emergency center of highway traffic accidents in Henan Province, the disability identification center of highway accidents in Henan Province, and the hospital of Henan Province. It is the first rheumatic chronic disease designated treatment unit of Henan Provincial Medical Insurance. The bone and joint department is the first in China to carry out difficult surgeries such as double hip, double knee, hip and knee joint replacement at the same time, and the technique of autologous blood transfusion and controlled hypotension to reduce intraoperative bleeding for patients with severe diabetes, hemophilia and advanced age and high risk, so that patients can recover as early as possible. We are the first in China to implement the preoperative patient informed choice consent system, giving patients the right to choose their treatment plan and inviting family members to observe the surgery live to strengthen the communication between doctors and patients, which really makes patients’ families informed and at ease. At the same time, we have widely carried out domestic and international academic exchanges, and have invited internationally renowned experts to our hospital for lectures and surgical exchanges. A number of advanced technologies, including hip and knee joint replacement using 3D computer and navigation system, have been taught to colleagues inside and outside the province. The first Chinese medicine pain-free ward in China was established, and the concept of “pain-free is the patient’s right” was carried out throughout the treatment process, so that the surgical patients could have a good recovery, which attracted many colleagues from inside and outside the province to visit our hospital for study. The first artificial joint club in China has been established to provide long-term rehabilitation guidance and lifelong care for patients who have received artificial joint replacements; many social welfare activities such as “New Joint, New Life, Love Relay” have been carried out, which has attracted wide attention from all walks of life. Director Sun Yongqiang said that poor patients in Henan Province who apply for medical assistance for joint replacement must meet the following two conditions: they must be evaluated by experts from Henan Provincial Hospital and meet the indications for joint replacement surgery; their families must be audited by the local civil affairs department as poor families. The program provides artificial joint products for free to eligible patients, and other costs are borne by the patients themselves. Sun Yongqiang said, the orthopedic injury treatment center of Henan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine will send the best orthopedic surgeon with the best technical ability and excellent team to operate for the patients, to ensure that the poor patients can enjoy the best surgical treatment and rehabilitation care while receiving the artificial joints.
