Abstract: This 6-year-old girl had a small meatball on her tongue for more than 2 months and had poor results with previous medications. However, the parents delayed the child’s consultation due to more things, and only when they found that the meatball on the child’s tongue was growing bigger and bigger, they rushed to bring her to the hospital for consultation. Through careful oral examination, the initial diagnosis was benign tongue tumor. After tongue mass excision, the tumor was removed and the tongue mucosa recovered well.
Basic information】Female, 6 years old
Disease Type】Benign tumor of tongue
Hospital】Nei Mongol Autonomous Region Maternal and Child Health Hospital
Date of consultation】April 2022
Treatment plan】Surgical treatment (tongue swelling removal) + epinephrine injection of aticaine
Treatment period】7 days of hospitalization, follow-up in 2 weeks
Treatment effect] The swelling was eliminated, and the sublingual mucosa returned to normal, with good treatment effect
I. Initial consultation
The parents were anxious to bring the child to the consultation, saying that the child had a small meatball on her tongue for 2 months, and initially they suspected that it was a fire and gave the child silver forsythia tablets for treatment, but it did not work. The parents were a bit overwhelmed and anxious, so they rushed to the hospital to register for a consultation. After careful questioning of the medical history, the parents said that the child had suffered a traumatic injury 2 months ago and had broken his tongue. Through careful oral examination, a swelling was seen in the sublingual mucosa, about 0.9cm×1.2cm in size, which was soft, unbroken and well-mobile. Then we explained to the parents in detail that the swelling needed surgical excision and pathological examination, and the parents agreed to undergo surgery.
II. Treatment process
After removing the contraindication to surgery, local anesthesia was applied to the tongue swelling by submucosal injection of epinephrine with atacaine, followed by excision of the tumor with a shuttle-shaped incision.
After the operation, the tongue swelling was sent to the pathology department for pathological examination, and the pathological return showed: extravasated cyst, i.e. benign tumor of the tongue, and both the parents and the child were finally relieved.
III. Treatment effect
On the second day after the operation, the child’s tongue swelling was excised in good condition, and on the seventh day of hospitalization, the child recovered well, with no blood oozing from the incision, no redness or swelling, no infection, and no special discomfort, so he was discharged. At the follow-up examination 1 week after discharge, the child was in a good mental state and had a normal complexion. The examination of the incision site showed that the incision was basically healed and the child had no special discomfort.
Notes
We are glad that the tongue tumor of the child is benign, but this tumor may recur, so we need to tell the parents to give the child a light diet and avoid hard and irritating foods, such as dry noodles and spicy strips. Also, remind the child not to bite the tip of the tongue during meals and to follow up if there is any discomfort.
Since children’s resistance is weak, parents should be advised to keep their children warm and to check the incision area for abnormal blood, ooze, redness, swelling, pain, etc. If there is any abnormality, come back to the clinic in time and do not take medication privately.
V. Personal insight
Medicine is not a panacea, especially do not give drugs to the child as the parents of the child in this article at will. I would like to advise parents to consult their children when they have any uncomfortable symptoms, and to carry out regular treatment after the doctor’s examination and diagnosis. For swelling diseases, unauthorized medication will not treat the child’s disease, but may aggravate the condition and cause adverse consequences.
