Why does constipation occur during pregnancy?

Mothers-to-be during pregnancy have many unspeakable problems: no shoes to wear because of edema; never dare to wear shoes with laces because they can’t bend over; frequent urination to the point of running to the toilet N times a night, and even wondering if they are leaking …… Another thing that cannot be ignored is constipation during pregnancy. The causes of constipation during pregnancy: Some mothers-to-be will experience nausea, vomiting, anorexia, anorexia and other pregnancy reactions in early pregnancy, called early pregnancy reaction. In the middle and late pregnancy, the symptoms of nausea, vomiting and anorexia will gradually decrease. As the growth rate of the baby in the belly accelerates, the mother-to-be’s appetite will become better and the phenomenon of picky eating will gradually decrease or even disappear. However, as the speed of intestinal peristalsis slows down, food stays longer in the intestine, the contact time with digestive juices increases, and the digestion of food is more complete. At the same time, the increased contact time between the digested food and the mucous membrane of the small intestine improves the absorption rate of nutrients and facilitates the utilization of nutrients in food by the mother-to-be, which is an adaptive physiological functional change arising during pregnancy; however, because of the more complete absorption of water, many mothers-to-be become constipated or the existing intestinal disorders become increasingly aggravated. At the same time, the physical activity of the mother-to-be is much reduced compared to that before pregnancy, resulting in the intestinal muscles not easily pushing the feces outward; and as the baby grows the uterus gradually enlarges and compresses the colon, slowing down the fecal operation and resulting in normal bowel movements. In addition, the mother-to-be is pregnant with increased progesterone, and progesterone can reduce the tension of the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract, causing difficulties in defecation, and can appear hemorrhoids because of the depressed venous blood flow. This matter may seem like a minor problem, but we still need to pay attention to it. Be careful when treating constipation during pregnancy: inappropriate treatment can harm your baby. Mothers-to-be belong to a special group, in the treatment of constipation, do not take oral lubricating laxatives, such as castor oil, liquid paraffin, etc. This affects the absorption of nutrients in the intestine, the baby’s nutrition is not well protected. And take laxatives or strong stimulating effect of laxatives, will make the gastrointestinal peristalsis enhanced cause uterine contractions, resulting in miscarriage or premature delivery.
