Precautions after permanent pacemaker implantation

1. Early post-operative period after pacemaker implantation Generally, the early post-operative period (within 24 hours) should be spent in a lying position with minimal activity. During the first week of pacemaker implantation, the implanted arm should not be raised above the head or move vigorously. For three months after implantation, avoid strenuous activities on the implanted side of the arm. After 1 to 2 months of surgery, the upper limb can be raised above the head so that the earlobe on the opposite side can be felt. After discharge from the hospital, physical exercise can be performed according to your physical strength, as long as you do not feel overly fatigued or short of breath and avoid strenuous right upper limb activities. 2.Effects of home and daily life appliances after pacemaker implantation Non-affecting appliances: TV, radio, vacuum cleaner, hairdryer, iron, washing machine, microwave oven, electric oven, electric blanket, car hearing aid, fax machine, photocopier, audio, earphone, computer, refrigerator, electric stove, massage chair, motorcycle Electrical appliances that may be affected by proximity: cell phone, high-power intercom, welding machine, metal detector, hand-held 3. Medical instruments No effect: Ultrasound, nuclear medicine, lung perfusion/ventilation scan, CT, X-ray, ECG. MRI, electric defibrillation, electric knife, electrocautery, short-wave/microwave diathermy, high/low-frequency therapy, radiotherapy 4. How to use the phone after the pacemaker If you use a cell phone after the pacemaker is installed, please keep the phone at a distance of more than 30 cm from the pacemaker implantation site when operating the cell phone. It is recommended to answer the cell phone with the ear on the side without the pacemaker; it is better to carry the cell phone in the lower jacket pocket or at the waist, not in the upper jacket pocket on the side with the pacemaker, otherwise the power of the cell phone should be turned off. 5. Follow-up visits In the early stage of pacemaker installation, patients may have one or another discomfort, therefore, it is necessary to have frequent follow-up visits with the doctor, usually once every month within six months of pacemaker installation, once every three months after six months, and once every six months after one year. However, the number of follow-up visits should be increased when the pacemaker is approaching its expected life expectancy. Patients with pacemakers can travel by any means of transportation, including cars, airplanes, boats, high-speed trains, magnetic levitation trains, etc. However, when traveling by airplane, your pacemaker will be detected by the metal detectors in the regular security check, and you will need to present your pacemaker implantation certificate or pacemaker implantation card, which is also valid abroad. When traveling, try to carry your pacemaker implantation card with you so that you can provide accurate information to your health care provider as soon as possible in case of temporary need and provide appropriate treatment in a timely manner. If there are no serious organic heart disease or other disease limitations, you can resume your normal school life after the pacemaker implantation. In later life, avoid weight-bearing with the arm on the side of the pacemaker implantation; hot baths have no effect on the pacemaker in principle. The pacemaker itself is not affected by diet. Ensure that all regular electrical appliances are grounded and avoid contact with devices that leak electricity. Driving a motorcycle or riding in a violently bumpy car may have an effect on some pacemakers and needs to be avoided.
