Can urinary retention heal on its own?

Most cases of urinary retention do not heal on their own and need to be treated after the cause is identified. In a few cases, it is caused by mental tension or improper urination patterns, and self-cure can be achieved after eliminating the triggering factors. Some patients can recover from urinary retention on their own after eliminating bad emotions and performing treatments to induce urination, such as listening to the sound of running water and washing the perineum with warm water. In case of urinary retention caused by prostatic hyperplasia, medication or surgery needs to be given. The medication can be tamsulosin hydrochloride extended-release capsules, or finasteride tablets. If the symptoms are severe or if medication fails, transurethral prostate plasma surgery or laser surgery can be considered to achieve a complete cure. In the case of urethral stones, tumors or the presence of urethral trauma, it is often impossible to urinate through a catheter, requiring a percutaneous suprapubic puncture of the bladder with an indwelling urinary catheter to drain the patient’s urine before treating the cause, such as lithotripsy, stone extraction, or surgical treatment for tumor removal or suture repair of the urethra. In addition, patients are advised to develop good living habits, avoid spicy and stimulating foods, avoid sedentary and overworking, and prevent constipation, holding urine and other undesirable behaviors.
