Pre-operative instructions for adenoids surgery

  Dear patient.
You are about to undergo adenoids surgery in our department. First of all, thank you for your trust in us. Before that, let’s understand a few questions that we are often asked.
  Where are the adenoids located?
The adenoids are located at the junction of the parietal and posterior walls of the nasopharynx, between the two pharyngeal fossae. To put it simply, it is behind the nose and above the passage to the throat. It is also above the passage where the ear meets the nose.
What are the effects of enlarged adenoids on the body?
Because of the location of the adenoids, children often suffer from nasal congestion due to enlarged adenoids blocking the posterior nostrils, and ear symptoms due to blockage of the pharyngeal orifice of the eustachian tube. In the ear, it can cause secretory otitis media, which can lead to stuffy ears and hearing loss in children. Nasal congestion can also cause a nasal sound when speaking. Long-term nasal discharge from the nasal cavity may irritate the mucous membrane of the throat, causing dry throat, itchy throat, recurrent cough and bronchitis. Long-term adenoid hypertrophy blocks the airway, so children cannot breathe through the nose during sleep, so they will naturally open their mouths during sleep and even snore. Long-term open-mouth breathing can lead to facial developmental disorders, long upper jaw, high arched hard palate, uneven teeth, exposed upper incisors, thick lips, lack of facial expression, and dementia, forming an “adenoid face”. Snoring at night and poor sleep quality can lead to morning hyperactivity, difficulty concentrating and reduced learning ability.
What are the adenoids surgery methods?
At present, the main method of adenoids surgery in our department is plasma radiofrequency reduction under direct vision with general anesthesia nasal endoscopy. The advantage of this procedure is that it is performed under direct vision to avoid damage to adjacent tissues and to maximize the removal of the adenoids. In addition, radiofrequency technology has the ability to stop bleeding while operating.
What do I need to pay attention to after surgery?
After surgery, the main thing to pay attention to is the bleeding situation, always spit out the saliva, do not swallow. If there is a little blood in the saliva, it is not necessary to mind, but if you continue to spit blood, you should call the doctor for examination. If you have a large mouthful of blood spit out after discharge, you should come to the hospital for a review in time.
What should I do with postoperative medication?
Most of the patients with adenoid hypertrophy are caused by allergic rhinitis and nasal congestion may occur after adenoid surgery. Therefore, after the surgery, you should use daily nasal linctus to constrict blood vessels, nasal hormone anti-inflammatory treatment, and hypertonic saline to clear the nasal cavity. This will keep the nasal cavity open for breathing and recovery. After discharge from the hospital, hypertonic saline nasal spray should be continued to clear the nasal cavity.
  Nasal lube + nasal rinse
Hang your head upside down, lay flat for one minute after three drops of nasal ling in each nostril and then get up, and ten minutes later hypertonic seawater nasal (Sinonin, sitting position), two sprays on each side, three times a day; nasal ling is usually used for no more than one week and hypertonic seawater nasal (preoperative and postoperative) for at least three to six months.
  Nasal hormones.
Every morning and evening, after hypertonic seawater nasal, nasal hormone (Nesuna or Reynocort) two sprays per nostril, two times a day. The person remains upright and sprays the right nostril with the left hand and the left nostril with the right hand. Inhale slightly backwards while spraying.
Do I need to be reviewed after surgery?
After discharge from the hospital, we will review once a week, and then again in 2 months if the wound has recovered well.
Director Li Yong studied in Germany and Austria and received his MD degree. He studied under Professor Stammberger and Professor Glanz, who are famous experts in otolaryngology, and has rich experience and unique understanding in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of nasal endoscopy, minimally invasive treatment of laryngeal microscopic support laryngoscopy, surgical treatment of snoring, allergic rhinitis and other diseases.
We wish all patients a speedy recovery. The recovery of the disease not only depends on the doctors’ treatment, but also on the patients’ own efforts. Let’s work together to cure adenoid hypertrophy and snoring.
