In May this year, Mr. Luo from Xiaogan was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma of the right scapula due to swelling and pain at the right scapula and impaired shoulder joint movement, and was told that he needed to undergo a total scaphorectomy of the right scapula, which is usually done by suspending the affected limb from the clavicle or ribs, and most of the functions of the affected limb would be affected and the affected limb would be virtually useless. Mr. Luo was only 21 years old, and his life was just beginning, so his family and he could not accept the cruel fact. Thankfully, Mr. Luo came to the Department of Orthopedics at the Union Hospital in August and met Professor Shao Zengwu. The Department of Orthopedics of the Union Hospital is the only national clinical key specialty of orthopedics in Hubei Province, and Professor Shao Zengwu is the head of the Orthopedic Tumor Group of the Hubei Orthopedic Society, and in recent years he has performed several “first surgeries” in bone tumor treatment – a 360-degree total spinal incision and reconstruction via the posterior approach in the central and southern regions. In recent years, he has performed several “firsts” in bone tumor treatment – 360-degree total spine dissection and reconstruction for thoracolumbar spine tumor in Central South region; combined semi-pelvic prosthesis replacement for pelvic tumor; abdominal aortic balloon block technique assisted resection of huge sacral tumor; artificial wrist joint replacement and so on. This time, Professor Shao Zengwu, with the strong support of Director Yang Shuhua, decided to perform another miracle by performing the extremely difficult international total shoulder arthroplasty with scapula after discussion among orthopedic professors. Due to the complex anatomy of the shoulder joint, adjacent to the thoracic cavity, subclavian arteries and veins and important vascular nerves such as the brachial plexus, the operation was prone to serious complications such as hemorrhagic shock, paralysis of the affected limb, and even death, making the surgery extremely risky. Shao Zengwu led his team to develop a thorough treatment plan for Mr. Luo to safely remove the tumor while preserving the function of the affected limb to ensure a foolproof operation. On September 25, with the cooperation of anesthesiologists, Prof. Shao Zengwu and Dr. Wu Qiang performed a total scaphoid resection + total scaphoid arthroplasty in accordance with a strict preoperative design. The operation took 4 hours and 1500ml of blood was transfused during the operation, and the patient returned to the ward smoothly after waking up. There was no complication after the operation, and the patient was discharged with satisfaction. This technique, which was the first to be carried out in the central and southern regions, marks a new step in the diagnosis and treatment of difficult bone tumors in the Department of Orthopedics of the Union Hospital. The Department of Orthopaedics of the Union Hospital has become one of the most important bone tumor treatment centers in China, and Professor Shao Zengwu of the Department of Orthopaedics has successfully bid for the right to host the 13th National Bone Tumor Conference next year.
