Uterine fibroids and ovarian cysts belong to the category of “obstruction in the abdomen” in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which can be treated with Chinese herbs such as Poria, Mudanpi, Seaweed and Kombu. Poria has the effects of inducing diuresis, subduing swelling and seeping dampness. It is mainly used for treating edema, phlegm (pathological products formed by water-liquid metabolism disorders), diarrhea due to spleen deficiency, palpitation, and insomnia. Caution should be exercised in cases of yin deficiency without dampness-heat, deficiency of cold and essence-slip, and qi deficiency and subsidence. Mudanpi, with the efficacy of clearing heat and cooling blood, activating blood circulation and removing blood stasis. It is mainly used in treating warm-heat spots (warm-heat poisonous evils invading the body resulting in spots and plaques on the skin), blood-heat epistaxis (vomiting of blood and nosebleed due to blood-heat), blood stagnation, menstrual occlusion and dysmenorrhea, bruises and pains, carbuncles, swellings and sores. It is also contraindicated in cases of blood deficiency, cold deficiency, pregnant women and women with excessive menstruation. Seaweed, has the effect of eliminating phlegm, softening hardness, diuresis and swelling. It is mainly used for treating gall tumors (equivalent to thyroid tumors), scrofula (mainly refers to cervical lymph node tuberculosis), testicular swelling and pain, phlegm and edema, etc. It is not recommended for people with deficiency of spleen and stomach. It is forbidden to be taken by people with cold spleen and stomach. Kombu, with the efficacy of eliminating phlegm and softening hardness, inducing diuresis and reducing edema. It is used for treating gall tumor, scrofula, testicular swelling and pain, phlegm and edema. It is not recommended for people with cold spleen and stomach.
