What is a dental cleaning?

Scaling, also known as dental cleaning and dental scaling, is when a doctor removes tartar and plaque from the surface of the teeth using ultrasonic scaling machines and sandblast scaling machines. The main types of scaling are: ultrasonic scaling and sandblasting scaling. Ultrasonic scaling uses ultrasonic vibrations from an ultrasonic scaling machine to loosen tartar, and then uses a scraper to remove the tartar. Ultrasonic scaling is more effective for tartar removal. However, for some exogenous staining of the teeth, especially the fissure of the sockets of the teeth or the smoke spots and tea spots in the interstices of the teeth that are difficult to remove by ultrasonic scaling, the method of sandblasting scaling should be used. Sandblast scaling machine uses a high-pressure airflow to spray a crystal salt onto the tooth surface to remove stains from the tooth surface and crevices to make the teeth whiter. Generally, sandblasting scaling is done after ultrasonic scaling, and it is more effective if it is combined with tooth surface polishing.
