1. Early detection and timely treatment Age-related deafness, like any kind of sensorineural deafness, is more effective the earlier it is treated, and it is more difficult to treat when the disease lasts for more than 2 months. It is recommended that once elderly people find that they have recently experienced significant hearing loss, they should promptly visit the ENT department of a hospital and receive active examination and treatment. Generally speaking, medication should be taken regularly for 2 to 3 months before the symptoms improve. 2. Timely selection of hearing aids Hearing-impaired elderly people need to wear hearing aids. One thing must be clear: hearing loss is just like myopic people wearing glasses, it is a result of social civilization and progress, there is no need to have doubts. The use of hearing aids requires attention to the following issues: (1) A detailed examination by an otologist and audiologist is required to select a suitable hearing aid according to the audiogram curve, and one should not buy one on the street at will. (2) Unilateral deafness or mild deafness generally does not require hearing aids. (3) Hearing aids are recommended for those with a hearing loss of 35 to 85 decibels. Those with a hearing loss of about 60 decibels have the best results. (4) For those with hearing loss greater than 85 dB, hearing aids can increase the volume, but they have no practical value because of their low speech recognition rate. (5) For those who are bilaterally deaf, if the hearing in both ears is more or less the same, the hearing aid can be worn in rotation. If the hearing difference between the two ears is large, but the hearing loss does not exceed 85 dB, it is appropriate to wear it on the side with the worse hearing. (6) The use of hearing aids has a process of adaptation, which generally takes 1 to 2 months. In addition, hearing aids are more effective when used indoors, but less effective when used in public places and noisy environments, because the noise is also amplified at the same time. Due to the special nature of senile deafness and the inevitability of neurological degeneration in the elderly, hearing aids sometimes do not achieve good results after wearing them. If the family’s financial condition allows, they can consider the installation of a cochlear implant (cochlear implant) to improve the hearing condition of elderly deaf patients. The cochlear implant can significantly improve the speech resolution of elderly people with hearing loss greater than 85 dB or even total deafness, and greatly improve the quality of life of elderly people. However, due to the high cost of cochlear implants, they are not yet available as a routine treatment in China. We recommend that when talking to deaf elderly people, you should listen patiently, avoid shouting at them and showing disgust and annoyance, speak as slowly and clearly as possible, and if necessary, use facial expressions or gestures to help the elderly understand the semantic meaning. We also hope that elderly people will face this natural physiological phenomenon of deafness positively, maintain a good attitude and optimism, arrange their lives reasonably, make more friends, participate in social and collective activities, and live their old age happily and peacefully.
