The Institute recommends a daily intake of 1,000 mg of calcium for men aged 50-70 years, and 1,200 mg of calcium for women over 50 years and men over 71 years. Interventions appropriate for the general population to maintain bone mass include the following: adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, lifelong weight bearing and muscle strength exercise (walking, jogging, Tai Chi, dancing, yoga, weight lifting, etc.) smoking cessation, no alcohol abuse, and fall prevention.
