Precautions for patients with periodontal disease

First, prevent or reduce systemic diseases, enhance nutrition, improve the overall health quality, so as to enhance the resistance of periodontal tissues; strive to maintain oral hygiene; resolutely quit the bad habits harmful to periodontal tissues (such as smoking, drinking alcohol, unilateral chewing, etc.). Second, protein is the basis of oral tissue growth and development, protein deficiency can aggravate the development of periodontal disease. Therefore, we should consume more high-protein foods, such as eggs, meat, cow’s milk, cheese, cereals, bean pods, dried fruits, etc. Third, do not eat large particles, coarse fiber food for a long time, because it can cause mechanical compression stimulation of the periodontal tissue, so that the local blood circulation is impaired, resulting in malnutrition of periodontal tissue, gingival atrophy, and increased alveolar bone resorption. However, do not eat too fine food for a long time. Fourth, improve personal oral hygiene, brush and rinse your teeth carefully. Brushing should be done in the correct way, that is, starting from the gums, brushing up and down along the longitudinal axis of the teeth, the action should be gentle and the time should reach 3 minutes, while brushing the teeth, the gums also get enough massage. Incorrect brushing methods such as excessive force, horizontal pulling brushing, oblique cross brushing, etc. may cause mechanical damage to periodontal tissues, causing local gum ulceration, ulcers, bleeding, and further periodontal atrophy. It is also very important to eliminate or reduce food impaction. Because food debris accumulates in the teeth for a long time, the pressure stimulates the gums and causes chronic inflammation, thus aggravating the gum atrophy.
