Patients with facial nerve palsy usually begin to recover within 1-2 weeks of onset, and approximately 80% of patients return to basic normalcy within a few weeks and 1-2 months. About 1/3 of patients have partial paralysis and 2/3 have complete paralysis. In the latter, about 16% do not recover. Facial neuritis, if recovery is incomplete, can often be accompanied by contractures of the paralyzed muscles and facial muscle spasms. Treatment is mainly divided into non-surgical and surgical treatment. Surgical treatment mainly causes local edema and inflammation to subside and prevents further damage to the facial nerve, while non-surgical treatment mainly includes medication, physical therapy and acupuncture.
