There are many causes of nasal bleeding in children. Generally speaking, children before the age of 2 years rarely have nasal bleeding because the capillary network of the nasal cavity is not well developed in this age group. The site of nasal bleeding in children is mostly in the capillary network in the anterior part of the nasal septum bilaterally, also called the Lai’s area. This vascular network is superficial and is distributed in the mucosal layer of the nasal septum. Nasal bleeding in children is a common phenomenon. In the hot climate in summer and dry indoor season in winter, nosebleeds in children are more frequent, especially some children often have nosebleeds at night, and many parents cannot help but worry about this. Nosebleeds, one of the common symptoms of nasal diseases. There are many causes of nosebleeds, and the examination should, in principle, determine the site of bleeding, estimate the amount of bleeding, and determine the cause of bleeding. In addition to examining the nasal cavity, we should also pay attention to the patient’s face, check the pulse and blood pressure, do blood tests and other necessary examinations. Generally speaking, it is commonly of local origin, commonly due to congenital capillary dilation, deviated nasal septum, nasal trauma, nasal inflammation and tumors of the nasal cavity, sinuses or nasopharynx. However, nearly half of the people cannot find the cause. We know that the microscopic blood vessels in the mucosa of the nasal cavity are very densely distributed, especially in children, and when the weather is cold at first and the nasal cavity is too dry, the capillaries inside will rupture and cause bleeding. From a clinical point of view, 90% of nosebleeds are vascular bleeding caused by the rupture of blood vessels. This phenomenon is relatively common, and in most cases can be handled on its own to stop the bleeding in time, so parents do not need to worry too much. In general, ruptured blood vessels in the nose do not require special treatment. The nose is part of the lung, and when the nose becomes ill, it is generally associated with abnormalities in the lungs and liver. When a person’s qi and blood rise, especially when the lung qi is hotter, the person will have nosebleeds. Therefore, attention should be paid to clearing heat and lowering fire in the daily diet, and eating less spicy food to avoid situations that lead to lung heat as much as possible. Why does the nose bleed more easily in the cold and dry season? It is mainly because in cold weather, we like to eat some hot food. When we eat, the heat will make the blood in the nasal cavity run faster, and if the nasal mucosa is naturally thin or has been injured before, it is easy to have nosebleeds. In addition, in a cold and dry environment, we need more blood to flow through the nasal cavity to increase the temperature and humidity, and the microscopic blood vessels of the nasal mucosa are therefore prone to congestion, which leads to nosebleeds. Children are active and often hurt their noses unintentionally. In addition, they may also develop bad habits such as digging their nostrils with their fingers, which may break the nasal mucosa. Parents should focus on education in life. The correct approach to nosebleeds: Keep your head in a normal upright or slightly leaning forward position and use your fingers to compress the front part of the nose (soft nose) on the bleeding side, similar to the general practice of pinching the nose with your hands, for about 5 to 10 minutes. Most patients can simply stop the bleeding by this method.
