The Ponseti method is currently recognized as the best conservative treatment for congenital clubfoot and has been widely used in China and abroad. In the past, the treatment mostly used extensive soft tissue release surgery, which required the release of the posterior medial tendons, joint capsule and ligaments of the foot. These tissues will be replaced by a large number of scar fibers after surgery, which will have an impact on the future development, function and stability of the foot, and will produce complications such as walking pain, osteoarthritis and talar necrosis in the long term. Therefore, pediatric orthopedic surgeons have now reached a consensus that not only infants and children with congenital clubfoot should be treated with the Ponseti method, but older children with clubfoot can also be treated with the Ponseti method or a combination of surgery and the Ponseti method to minimize the scope of surgery and strive for maximum restoration and long-term preservation of foot function so that children can live and learn normally.
