Physiological hypersalivation in children may be due to hyper-secretion of salivary glands stimulated by food or eruption of milk teeth.
Pathological hypersalivation in children can be seen in diseases such as oral inflammation, mechanical damage to the parotid glands, cerebral palsy and Down’s syndrome. It is important to note that often parents and friends and relatives like to squeeze their children’s cheeks out of fondness, which can cause mechanical damage to the parotid glands and lead to a much higher saliva production than normal children.
