Amount and interval of infant breastfeeding

The amount and interval of breastfeeding varies by month of age and feeding on demand is usually sufficient. Infants from 0-3 months are fed on demand and do not need to calculate the exact amount and timing of feedings. Many infants spend most of their time sleeping and can be fed whenever they are hungry, usually 6-8 times a day or more. The exact amount of breastfeeding, however, can be determined by the infant’s weight and increases with the infant’s monthly age. Infants over 3 months old can try to feed every 3 hours with about 180-300ml per feeding, but if the infant is still sleeping, it is not recommended to disturb the child’s sleep. In addition, if breastfeeding, it is generally recommended to suckle on one breast for no more than 20 minutes before switching to the other breast to ensure that the infant can suckle enough nutrients. In case of mixed feeding, formula should be brewed according to a strict ratio and avoid brewing directly with boiling hot water to prevent destroying the beneficial components of the formula.
