Leukorrhea symptoms in early pregnancy

Leukorrhea increases in early pregnancy and is egg-white like in nature.

Leukorrhea, clinically and customarily called vaginal discharge, is composed of fluid secreted from the cervix and vagina, epithelial cells shed from the vagina and normal flora in the vagina. After pregnancy, a series of physiological changes will occur in the body of pregnant women, such as changes in the cervix and vagina, in order to adapt to the growth and development of the fetus and to prepare for delivery.

After pregnancy, the level of estrogen in the pregnant woman’s body increases, and under the effect of estrogen, the blood flow in the vaginal area is rich, and there is an increase in vaginal exfoliated cells and secretions in the form of white paste, i.e. leucorrhea. When the cervix starts to shorten and dilate, the mucus plugs are discharged, resulting in a discharge like egg white or snot, sometimes with a little blood. The mucus plug is rich in immunoglobulins and cytokines, which protect the uterine cavity from foreign infections.

To sum up, normally, pregnant women in early pregnancy will experience an increase in leucorrhea, which is egg-white or milky white. If the leucorrhea suddenly increases, changes in color or nature, such as watery, mucus-like, bean curd-like, foamy, smelly, or accompanied by vulvar itching and burning, you should be alert to the possibility of vaginitis combined with pregnancy, and should go to the hospital for examination and use medication under the guidance of a doctor if necessary.
