Hiccups are associated with involuntary contraction of the diaphragm. When the diaphragm is stimulated by some factor, the diaphragm contracts spastically, driving air rapidly into the lungs and triggering a sudden closure of the vocal cords on both sides, producing a sound similar to an “uh”, usually short and high pitched.
