In some patients with small cysts that are not causing complications and where the patient is generally well, the surgeon may remove the cyst at an outpatient day surgery centre, in which case the patient usually does not need to be hospitalised and can be discharged the same day after removal under appropriate observation.
For patients with cysts complicated by infection, abscesses or larger cysts in special locations (e.g. spine, ovaries, skull, etc.), hospitalization for observation and treatment is usually required for another 5-7 days after surgical removal before discharge to help prevent post-operative infection and promote wound recovery. Complete wound recovery after surgery usually takes 2 to 3 weeks, and recovery time may vary for cystectomies in different areas.
