What is the cause of red itchy eyes?

Red, itchy eyes are most commonly associated with allergic conjunctivitis or dry eye, the former being a hypersensitive immune response of the conjunctiva to external allergens, and patients may have other allergic symptoms, such as allergic rhinitis, which tend to have a seasonal onset and are relieved by topical anti-allergy eye drops when red, itchy eyes are evident. Most often the symptoms worsen with excessive eye use and visual fatigue, and are also accompanied by dryness and other discomfort, which can be relieved by topical drops of artificial tear drops.
