The best time for children to get braces

The best time for children to get braces is related to the type of malocclusion and should be analyzed on a case-by-case basis, not as a generalization. If it is a general dental malformation, the best age for orthodontic treatment is 12-13 years old, because children usually have just replaced their teeth and are in a period of high growth and development. In the case of functional malformations, which often occur between the ages of 6 and 12, the best age for orthodontic treatment is 6-12 years old, as they may develop into bony malformations if orthodontic treatment is delayed. In the case of bony malocclusion, orthodontic treatment should be performed before the peak growth period of children, i.e. 10-12 years old for girls and 11-13 years old for boys. However, if the anterior teeth are backbite, commonly known as diastema, this deformity has a more serious impact on the jaw development of children and should be corrected immediately once it occurs, the earliest correction can begin at about 3 1/2 years old. Children’s braces generally take about a year and a half to two years, parents are advised to take their children to the regular hospital dentistry, by professional doctors according to the individual situation to develop an orthodontic plan.
