The level of oestrogen in a woman’s body starts to rise after her last period and reaches a peak around the time of ovulation. The large amount of oestrogen can lead to breast enlargement and duct filling and expansion, and nipple pain can occur when the enlarged or expanded breast or duct presses and stimulates the sensory nerve endings located in the nipple.
