Happy Pregnancy Ultrasound Part I

You can see the fetal baby stretching, yawning, sucking fingers …… because of the clear imaging, but also to the baby in the abdomen in advance of the “photo”, “high-end atmosphere,” the four-dimensional ultrasound let The actual “high end and classy” 4D ultrasound makes many pregnant mothers love it for ten minutes and can’t stop. For the malformation screening that pregnant mothers are very cautious about, 4D ultrasound is also given full trust. 4D ultrasound has almost replaced the term “fetal screening”. Under the excessive publicity of some hospitals, mothers-to-be even believe that 4D ultrasound is more accurate than the ordinary 2D ultrasound. This view is actually incorrect. Professor Dong Xiaoqiu, director of our ultrasound department, said that for screening fetal malformations, the best test is screening based on ordinary ultrasound. 4D ultrasound ≠ fetal malformation screening Recently, Xiao Wang, an expectant mother who has been pregnant for nearly three months, went to the hospital for a routine prenatal checkup. “The doctor asked her to give me a 4D ultrasound. The doctor, however, rejected Xiao Wang’s request after a detailed consultation. “In your current situation, you just need to do a normal ultrasound”. In the face of the doctor’s advice, Xiao Wang did not buy it. In her opinion, four-dimensional ultrasound price and high image clarity, is the real “high”. But why did the doctor not recommend her to do it? From two-dimensional ultrasound to three-dimensional and even four-dimensional ultrasound, this is a development process of ultrasound diagnostic technology, traditional two-dimensional ultrasound is the basis, three- and four-dimensional ultrasound is only an auxiliary method. 4-dimensional ultrasound is not a necessary examination. Its function of “taking pictures” is just icing on the cake. For malformation screening, its accuracy has to have another additional condition, that is, there must be enough amniotic fluid to make a good and accurate image. No doctor or specialist can claim that 4D can replace the role of conventional 2D ultrasound. 2D ultrasound is the most reliable The so-called 2D ultrasound, which is the ultrasound we are most commonly exposed to on a daily basis. For fetal screening, although it does not sound “high”, but the fetal malformations also “can not escape” its eyes, and the price is “affordable”, is the medical profession recommended for It is the first choice for systematic fetal screening. How to get a good screening for fetal malformations? It requires two basic conditions: in addition to the reliance on the accuracy of the instrument, it also requires a certain level of skill on the part of the ultrasonographer. A systematic fetal screening during the mother-to-be’s pregnancy requires an examination of the anatomical structures of the fetus from head to toe on the basis of a routine ultrasound examination. The sonographer must have sufficient experience, be familiar with the normal morphological structures and sonographic features of the fetus and malformations, operate according to the ultrasound screening process, and use scanning techniques and diagnostic associations to detect fetal malformations acutely and accurately. When fetal abnormalities are detected by general ultrasound, such as cleft lip and palate, abnormal heart structure, etc., then “4D” ultrasound can come into play. Through computer reconstruction, 4D ultrasound can show the three-dimensional structure of the fetus, and the imaging will be clearer, so that the obstetrician can better grasp the condition of the fetus, and the parents-to-be can understand it more easily.
