How soon can I be discharged from the hospital after a cesarean section?

The discharge time for cesarean section varies slightly from hospital to hospital, with most hospitals arranging discharge 4-7 days after cesarean section, depending on the patient’s postoperative recovery. Cesarean section requires 2-3 days of bed rest, 3 days of indocin sedation, and lots of antibiotics to prevent wound infection depending on the intraoperative situation. The number of days of hospitalization for cesarean section patients is related to the surgical method. If the cesarean section is performed with a transverse abdominal wall incision, the stitches can be removed 4 days after the cesarean section under normal circumstances; if the cesarean section is performed with a longitudinal abdominal wall incision, it usually takes 7 days to remove the stitches, and after the sutures are removed, it takes about 1 week to be discharged from the hospital. In addition, the number of days the patient is hospitalized is also related to the incision sutures; if absorbable sutures are used, the sutures do not need to be removed and the patient can be discharged as long as the patient’s condition recovers satisfactorily and the abdominal wall incision recovers well. Therefore, if there are no other comorbidities after cesarean section, the patient can usually be discharged within 4-7 days. In case of serious complications after cesarean section, such as co-infection, the hospital stay will be extended appropriately. In addition, women are advised to get out of bed promptly within 24 hours after delivery to prevent venous thrombosis of both lower limbs.
