There is a report of a patient who drank alcohol while taking antibiotics leading to serious consequences and died of a heart attack. In general the pathogenicity is mild, the above case is exceptional, but it should be taken seriously. The reason is that antibiotics can cause the accumulation of acetaldehyde, a product of the alcohol metabolism process. Acetaldehyde accumulation can produce a number of adverse reactions, such as: nausea, vomiting, palpitations, dyspnea, and in severe cases, shock and heart failure. This is often referred to as a disulfiram-like reaction.
