Overview of snoring Snoring is the common name of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, a widespread sleep phenomenon, which most people think is commonplace and do not take it seriously, and habitually regard snoring as the performance of good sleep. There is a gap between snoring in the eyes of the people and snoring in the understanding of doctors, who are concerned about the apnea that accompanies the snoring process rather than the mere snoring, and the apnea that accompanies the snoring process is the cause of the threat to health. Modern medicine has confirmed that snoring is a manifestation of airway obstruction and called snoring. When snoring is serious, the airway is partially or completely obstructed, leading to sleep apnea and hypoventilation symptoms, thus causing lack of oxygen and carbon dioxide retention in the body. In adults, long-term sleep apnea can lead to hypertension, myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular accident, diabetes, kidney disease, endocrine disorders, loss of concentration and memory, daytime sleepiness, sexual dysfunction, and even sudden death during sleep. If children snore at night, especially if they snore heavily, their sleep is often interrupted and they do not get a good rest at night, so they are in “oxygen debt” for a long time, which leads to poor spirit and appetite during the day and insufficient caloric intake of food. In serious cases, because of long-term mouth breathing, it causes abnormal development of facial skull, resulting in small jaw deformity, high arched palate, uneven teeth, long maxilla, prominent upper incisors and thick lips, which is clinically called adenoid face. Epidemiology shows that because of husband snoring, his partner sleeps 1-2 hours less every night, or has to wake up from snoring, and many women have neurological weakness due to husband’s snoring, and there are even reports of marriage breakup caused by snoring, which shows that snoring is definitely not a normal phenomenon but a serious disease, and is the culprit of inducing other diseases and poor control of cardiovascular and endocrine diseases. Studies have reported that more than 45% of elderly people snore and 25% of adults snore habitually, so snoring is commonplace. The prevalence of OSAHS in Shanghai population is about 3.62%. Some patients cannot clearly realize that apnea has occurred during sleep, but only feel very tired after waking up, and do not know enough about its danger, so people have not regarded snoring as a disease in the past, let alone linking it with life threatening. However, clinical studies have proven that the 5-year morbidity and mortality rate of untreated OSAHS patients is as high as 11-13%, and the 8-year morbidity and mortality rate of those with apnea and hypoventilation index >20 is 37%, and traffic accidents related to OSAHS account for 25% of the total traffic accidents, which is 2-7 times of the control group, so patients with severe snoring should go to the hospital as soon as possible, and experts will use the sleep respiratory monitoring system to clearly diagnosis and determine the treatment plan. Diagnosis of snoring At present, polysomnography is the “gold standard” for the diagnosis of snoring, you only need to sleep in the hospital for one night to know whether it is snoring or not, and get the type of snoring. Treatment of snoring At present, continuous positive pressure ventilation therapy for snoring is the preferred treatment for OSAHS, however, its long-term compliance varies roughly from 46% to 83%. For some patients, surgical treatment is an important alternative option. Our clinical practice shows that according to the severity of snoring disease and craniofacial structure, different surgical methods and post-operative follow-up treatment can be used, and the surgical efficacy can reach about 70%.
