This year, July 8 is the first World Allergy Day jointly initiated by the World Allergy Organization and the World Health Organization. With the increase in air pollution, changes in eating habits and living environment, the decrease in the number of children in families and the decrease in infectious diseases in early childhood, allergic diseases such as allergic rhinitis, asthma, eczema and urticaria have become global diseases that affect human health in the 21st century and seriously affect people’s quality of life. In allergic rhinitis, for example, patients suffer from paroxysmal sneezing, several or even dozens of sneezes each time, large amounts of clear water nasal discharge, nasal congestion and even headaches, which directly affect work and study, sleep and social interaction; asthma attacks require hospitalization, which, in addition to reducing the quality of life, also requires large medical expenses. In life, many people know very little about allergic diseases, some people think it is an old problem again; some people think it is hereditary, “my family is like this” is their mantra; many allergic rhinitis patients think they have a poor constitution, always in the “cold Many allergic rhinitis patients believe that they have a poor constitution and are always “catching a cold”, with their handkerchiefs in their hands. As the name suggests, it means “pathological reaction caused by hypersensitivity to external substances”, the external substances that cause allergic reactions are called “allergens”, such as a few people are using eggs after the rash, diarrhea, the eggs are allergens. Allergens are generally caused by inhalation, ingestion, contact or injection into the body, and symptoms vary widely depending on the site of onset. Inhaled allergens usually cause allergic rhinitis and asthma. “Sneezing and nasal discharge” is the hallmark of allergic rhinitis, while recurrent episodes of wheezing, dyspnea, chest tightness or coughing, with a certain pattern of onset, or smelling unusual odors or going to a specific location, can mean an asthma attack. Specific foods such as milk and eggs can cause food allergies, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, etc. If a lady who loves beauty develops red spots or small papules after using a certain cosmetic product, it may be a skin allergy. If children have scattered or patchy papules on the face and buttocks that do not heal, and the child scratches frequently, it may be childhood eczema. If you have a fever and cold and a positive penicillin skin test before infusion, consider drug allergy. Sometimes multiple allergies may appear in the same patient and interact with each other, for example, a patient with allergic rhinitis may develop asthma, while he may be a child with eczema at an early age. This is medically known as “atopy”. Allergic diseases are actually immune disorders and are difficult to treat because the pathogenesis is unknown. However, it is possible to reduce the number of attacks, control allergic symptoms, improve the quality of life and even return to a normal disease-free state. First of all, it is important to understand the disease, build confidence and not to have panic and pessimism because it cannot be completely cured; this part is also known as missionary education for patients and is an essential aspect of treatment. Secondly, avoid contact with allergens, guide patients to find traces of allergens in their daily life, try to avoid contact with “allergens”, then you can maintain a normal life. Food and contact allergens can be easily detected and avoided, but inhalant allergens are not easy to find, but the following points can be used for targeted allergen detection. If you are sleeping next to a pillow, the contents of the pillow will be a suspect; if you are embarrassed when cleaning, mites may be at work. In addition to the above-mentioned allergen screening, you can go to the hospital otolaryngology department for further allergen skin testing to find inhalant allergens. But remember that finding allergens helps in diagnosis and treatment, if not found, it does not mean that there is no allergen, there are too many kinds of allergens in nature, only a limited number of common allergens can be checked. There are also some diseases that are similar to nasal allergy, their performance is very similar to nasal allergy, and the treatment is similar, but the pathogenesis is different, not due to external allergens, so no allergen can be found. If specific allergens are found, in addition to avoiding contact as much as possible, desensitization treatment can be carried out. If allergens are not found, do not be disappointed, as controlling the disease with medication can still allow patients to return to a healthy life. It is believed that as research continues, the mystery of the pathogenesis of allergic diseases will eventually be uncovered, but until then, we must rely on the interaction between specialists and patients to make allergies come less often, symptoms less severe, life better and cost less.
