Why do cesarean incisional diverticula occur?

Cesarean incisional diverticula are a common post-operative complication of cesarean delivery, with symptoms varying depending on the size of the diverticulum. When the diverticular space is large, there is a greater accumulation of blood in the cervix and an increased chance of menstrual dripping, while smaller diverticula can be uncomfortable and are often detected during gynaecological ultrasound.
It is important to remember that if there is a requirement to have another baby, it must be checked and assessed at a regular hospital to see if it needs to be repaired surgically before allowing another baby, otherwise there is a risk of uterine rupture in another pregnancy.
