In the anorectal department, patients who experience anal swelling can undergo anal visualization and rectal palpation to observe any abnormalities around the anus and the inner rectal wall, and then also undergo CT examinations, magnetic resonance imaging, routine blood tests, C-reactive protein tests and blood sedimentation to determine whether the tissues around the anal canal and rectum are normal and whether there are pathogenic microbial infections in order to confirm the diagnosis.
If the examination at the anorectal unit is also abnormal, the patient should consider that it is due to a gynaecological or urological condition and may visit that unit to further investigate the problem. If it remains unresolved, it may be psychological in nature and a psychiatric consultation should be sought.
