Post-menopausal women occasionally develop urethral caruncles due to endocrine changes, which manifest themselves as bright red coloured polyp-like masses found at the outer orifice of the urethra, usually accompanied by bladder irritation symptoms such as frequent, urgent and painful urination. It can be cured by surgery.
