What tests are usually done for coughing up sputum?

The doctor will usually take a history of the patient, find out how long the coughing has lasted, the nature, colour, smell and volume of the sputum and the accompanying symptoms, and then, depending on the condition, may prescribe ancillary tests such as routine blood tests, imaging tests, lung function and, if necessary, bronchoscopy and allergen testing to clarify the condition and assess its severity.
