Cardiac surgeon performs three difficult surgeries in a row

The Department of Cardiac Surgery completed three consecutive difficult cardiac surgery procedures on four days – heart transplantation, valve replacement again for prosthetic valve dysfunction, and surgery for giant ascending aortic aneurysm. At present, all three patients are recovered and discharged from the hospital. On Monday, everyone was excited to start a new job. The department suddenly received a notice from the hospital that there was a donor heart and that a heart recipient could be arranged to come to the hospital for heart transplantation. Everyone was happy and nervous because if there was a donor heart, it would prolong a person’s life, but time was short and the surgery had to be arranged as soon as possible, otherwise the golden opportunity for heart transplantation would be missed. The hospital mobilized medical and nursing staff to arrange for the recipient and donor to be examined and enter the operating room. The Director of Cardiac Surgery, Feng Jatao, led the doctors to remove the donor heart and the recipient heart at the same time. After more than 5 hours of struggle, the donor heart was beating again in the body of the patient waiting for a heart transplant, and at that moment everyone in the operating room was encouraged and excited. After a day of treatment and care, the condition of the heart transplant patient tended to stabilize. 8 o’clock on the evening of the 30th, the physician on duty was notified that the Nanhai People’s Hospital had admitted a patient with mitral valve prosthetic valve dysfunction, whose condition was critical and needed to be transferred to the First People’s Hospital of Foshan City for treatment. The doctor on duty reported the situation to Director Feng Jatao, who said, “We all worked hard yesterday for surgery, but the patient with the stuck valve is in critical condition and only emergency surgery tonight can save the patient’s life, arrange all preoperative preparations as soon as possible and notify all relevant personnel to prepare for surgery tonight!” The patient was admitted to our cardiac surgery department at 8:30, with a frightened look, cyanosis, blood pressure of 65/45mmHg, oxygen saturation of 60%, the physician on duty organized the rescue and notified all departments to prepare for the surgery. After 8 hours of surgery, the patient was rescued, and after the surgery, the patient was restored to cardiopulmonary function using ECMO, the latest technology in cardiac surgery, and returned to the ward safely. The cardiac surgery staff had serious expressions. After two days of hard work, there was an even more difficult task today – to operate on a patient with a huge ascending aortic aneurysm. The patient had undergone aortic valve replacement in a local hospital ten years ago, and later found that the ascending aorta was dilated and continued to increase in size, and had visited many hospitals, but was politely refused to operate because of the high risk and difficulty of the operation. The patient approached Director Feng Jiatao and asked for the best treatment. Director Feng Jiatao firmly said to the patient: “This surgery is risky, but it must be done, otherwise it will be life-threatening. After 14 hours of surgery, Director Feng Jatao successfully removed the giant 11cm diameter ascending aortic aneurysm and replaced it with an artificial vessel, giving the patient a new lease on life. The three patients were discharged from the hospital, and we are proud and honored that the Department of Cardiac Surgery, the Department of Anesthesiology and the Cardiac Surgery CCU of Foshan First People’s Hospital have high level of treatment and care technology, and we can escort the patients and give them a “heart” future.
