The disease is not usually transmitted from patient to patient. It is mainly caused by inhalation of Aspergillus spores, which are commonly found in damp environments such as farmland, horse barns, cattle pens and barns. In some immunocompromised patients, it can spread to organs throughout the body by bloodstream transmission.
