Glaucoma surgery mostly lasts from six months to more than 20 years, depending on the type of glaucoma, the type of surgery and the post-operative care routine. Details are as follows.
If patients choose to undergo laser iridotomy, the surgical effect is maintained for a relatively short period of time, usually within 5 years, and in a small number of patients the surgical effect only lasts about half a year; if patients choose to undergo trabeculectomy, trabeculotomy or glaucoma drainage implantation, the surgical effect is maintained for a longer period of time, most patients can maintain it for more than 5 years; some patients with better daily care can maintain it for more than 20 years.
Patients who smoke and drink heavily after surgery, have reversed day and night schedules, are irritable, and do not take good care of themselves can drastically reduce the effectiveness of glaucoma surgery.
