Foot and ankle sprains are the most common acute sports injuries. Ankle injuries are also the most prevalent joint injury in the body. Most ankle injuries occur when walking, running, jumping or descending stairs. The cause of ankle injuries is related to the anatomical characteristics of the ankle joint, as well as to overuse and constant weight bearing and pressure. When the foot is plantar-flexed during ankle movement, it tends to invert, which means that the ankle joint is relatively unstable during the movement of descending stairs and is easily sprained. In addition, the lateral collateral ligaments and muscles of the ankle are weaker than the medial ligaments, which is also a cause of easy injury. Ankle injuries are prone to re-injury and chronic functional instability after the injury. It is usually important to go to the hospital after an ankle injury to check for fractures, tendon and ligament injuries excluded. Plain X-rays can observe whether there is damage to the bones of the foot and are not effective in observing muscle-ligament problems. Therefore, in the absence of problems with plain X-rays, it is not possible to exclude other soft tissues from having injuries. Rehabilitation after ankle injury or postoperative rehabilitation is very important for the recovery of foot and ankle function, as well as for the prevention of repeated injuries. In the early stages of acute injury, the principles of treatment should be mastered: local cold compresses, compression bandages, elevation of the limb, and relative braking. In addition, the rehabilitation program after ankle injury or surgery is individualized and depends on the individual’s injury type, surgical approach, fracture site, fixation technique, and the impact of bone scab healing. There are usually four stages to go through, each with a different approach to rehabilitation, and there is not one universal approach. A scientific rehabilitation program is beneficial to ensure the best functional recovery, and physical therapy is beneficial to reduce swelling and pain and promote healing, but it is important to go to a regular hospital for standardized treatment.
