Canker sores are acute purulent infections of multiple adjacent hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands caused by Staphylococcus aureus. It occurs on the face, neck, and chest and back. The symptoms are usually redness, swelling, pain and, in severe cases, pus. Chinese herbal medicine is mostly used to clear heat and detoxify, cool blood and disperse nodules. Western medicine treatment is based on anti-infection, including oral drugs and topical drugs, such as roxithromycin, amoxicillin and other oral drugs, and topical drugs such as Bactrim, polymyxin B ointment and erythromycin ointment. In more serious cases, surgical incision should be performed promptly to empty the internal pus and avoid infection.
