Patients with high blood pressure who show evidence of deficiency can eat Astragalus and Codonopsis. 1. Astragalus, sweet in flavor and slightly warm in nature, belongs to the lung and spleen meridians. It has the effect of replenishing qi and raising yang (replenishing qi to raise yang qi), generating fluid and nourishing blood (replenishing water and blood in the body), etc. It can be used in cases of qi deficiency and weakness, as well as in cases of loose stools (sparse and unformed stools). 2. Radix Codonopsis pilosulae is sweet in flavor and neutral in nature, and belongs to the spleen and lung meridians. It has the effects of strengthening the spleen and lungs (strengthening the functions of the spleen and lungs), nourishing blood and promoting the production of body fluid. This product can be used for spleen and lung qi deficiency, poor appetite and tiredness, cough and asthma, deficiency of qi and blood, yellowish color (yellowish color without luster), palpitation (rapid heartbeat, often accompanied by panic), shortness of breath, thirst due to injury of fluids, and thirst due to internal heat. This product should not be used by those who have solid or hot symptoms but are not deficient in positive qi, and should not be used with quinoa. Hypertension belongs to the category of “dizziness” and “headache” in Chinese medicine. Hypertension manifests as a deficiency syndrome in patients with hypertension, mostly in the late stage of hypertension, which is related to the fire that drains qi and injures yin, and burns yin fluid. It is usually accompanied by symptoms such as five heart-heat (heat in the hearts of the hands and feet, and self-consciousness of the heart and chest (irritability and sultriness)), hot flashes (a burst of heat), night sweating (abnormal sweating after going to sleep, and sweating stops after waking up), and dryness in the mouth, etc., and the treatment of which is based on replenishing the qi and nourishing the yin. Therefore, for patients whose hypertension is characterized by deficiency syndrome, astragalus and codonopsis can be taken to benefit qi and nourish yin (tonifying qi and nourishing yin fluids). If medication is needed, it is recommended to consult a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner for evidence-based guidance and follow the doctor’s instructions for standardized treatment, rather than blindly self-medicating to avoid delaying the condition.
