When constipation due to dietary habits, anorexia and other mental illnesses is identified, endoscopy may be dispensed with. When the cause is unknown and the patient presents with sudden weight loss, anaemia and blood in the stool, endoscopy is required to determine the presence of lesions of the colon and rectal mucosa and the next step in treatment is based on the findings.
