What you must know about the causes of tinnitus

Tinnitus, as the name implies, is a sound that is subjectively perceived by the human ear in the absence of external sound stimulation. It is also a symptom that some people often feel some special sound in their ears such as buzzing, hissing or sharp whistling, but cannot find the corresponding sound source around them. Although tinnitus is an illusion that occurs in the auditory system and is a symptom rather than a disease, it can make people upset and restless, and can affect normal life and work in serious cases. As for the causes of tinnitus, there are only two types of tinnitus: functional and organic. Organic tinnitus is relatively rare, mainly caused by otosclerosis, acute and chronic inflammation of the middle ear, vascular diseases, auditory neuroma and other causes. Functional tinnitus is more common, which means that no lesions have been found through various examinations. Today I will mainly talk about this aspect, which is the main reason why this kind of tinnitus bothers the majority of tinnitus patients. As for those who have found some organic lesions, they are not so troubled, which can be said to be related to people’s daily mentality and fear of the unknown. For example, if you have an exam that has a critical impact on you, you will be very nervous and anxious about your test results until the results are out. Tinnitus is also similar to these. When you know the cause, such as otosclerosis, auditory neuroma, etc., you will think about how to treat these diseases instead of caring about the tinnitus, and naturally, you will not feel the impact of tinnitus on you. But for the functional ones, because you don’t know the cause yourself, you focus more on the tinnitus instead! And once you put your attention and focus on the tinnitus, you spend the whole day thinking about what caused the tinnitus, and often listen to whether the tinnitus has disappeared or not, after such reinforcement and implication, how it will ease up and disappear! It is strange that it does not aggravate. Patients with long-term tinnitus are prone to symptoms of anxiety or depression, and also develop a more negative attitude towards life. The impact of this state change even exceeds the inconvenience of tinnitus itself, and also further aggravates the sensation of tinnitus. In contrast, a good emotional and psychological state such as relaxation and cheerfulness and an optimistic attitude towards life can reduce or alleviate tinnitus, which is the root of the treatment. At present, many experts endorse the idea that this so-called functional tinnitus is actually the recollection of certain sounds in the auditory cortex of people’s brain (except that this recollection, a little like the theory of how to produce dreams, is all modified and changed in some way). It has an impact on your life. Therefore, the key to treating this type of tinnitus is to ignore it, which is the one that has proven to be most effective. I often tell my tinnitus patients that when you feel tinnitus, you should think about other happy things or do other things to distract your attention, and if that doesn’t work, you can listen to some soothing soft music that helps to calm your mind and sleep. If you think of my words, you just have to remember what Dr. Liu said to me: I don’t have anything growing in my ears, and I won’t have cancer such as tumors, so I can’t die, it’s not a big deal (of course, I said this only after I checked him/her and there is no problem). In short, remember that life is good and there is no difficulty that cannot be overcome; the same is true for tinnitus.
