In my daily practice, I often encounter parents who bring their children to the clinic and cannot answer the question, “How much has your child grown in the past six months?” “How much has your child grown in the last year?” It’s a pity that they can’t answer questions about their children’s growth rate. According to the data, there are more than 4.3 million people with short stature due to growth disorders in China, and the number is increasing at the rate of 161,000 every year. More than 90% of the affected children have low self-esteem, autism, depression, psychological vulnerability and other psychological disorders, and tend to be more sensitive and lack self-confidence than the general population. Patients with short stature often have certain disorders that, if not diagnosed and treated early, affect lifelong height and quality of life. The age that can strongly draw my attention to their height is mostly between 15-16 years old, when the growth of bones, especially the growth of long bones that determine human height, mostly tends to stop. Therefore, it is very important for parents to take the responsibility of monitoring the height of their children and to measure their height regularly and regularly. If you find that your child is 30% shorter than the average height of children of the same sex and age around you, or less than 2 standard deviations, you should go to a medical institution in a timely manner to seek medical advice and treatment as soon as possible. Parents need to be reminded that many parents do not know that their children need to consult a doctor to find out the cause of their short stature, they think it may be “late growth” and leave their children’s height to time, or buy their children some health products with exaggerated functions, or use so-called height increasing products. These blind measures often delay treatment and even backfire.
