How ischemic optic neuropathy is diagnosed

Ischemic optic neuropathy can usually be diagnosed by symptoms, fundus examination, visual field examination, and fundus angiography. Patients with ischemic optic neuropathy may have a sudden onset of vision loss, and funduscopic examination reveals limited edema of the optic disc, which may be accompanied by peripapillary linear hemorrhage. Visual fields may also be examined, and patients may present with bow-shaped or fan-shaped defects in association with physiologic blind spots. Fundus angiography may reveal weak fluorescence or sluggish filling of the optic disc in the early stages, and fluorescein leakage in the late stages. It is recommended that patients with ischemic optic neuropathy seek prompt medical attention to evaluate their condition and follow medical advice.
