Acute conjunctivitis, also known as acute catarrhal conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, is a highly contagious conjunctivitis that occurs in the spring and fall, with an acute onset and the most common causative agents being S. pneumoniae, S. aureus, and Haemophilus influenzae. The main symptoms are conjunctival congestion, conjunctival edema, mucopurulent discharge, and, in the case of children, hemorrhage under the bulbar conjunctiva. The principle of treatment is to avoid bandaging the affected eye, treatment is mainly eye drops and ointment with broad-spectrum antibiotics, such as tobramycin eye drops and ointment, gatifloxacin eye drops, levofloxacin eye drops or ointment, and in severe cases, penicillin should also be given intramuscularly or intravenously.
