Dry weather makes children prone to nosebleeds

As we enter winter, the air gets drier and drier, and the most intuitive feeling is a dry, uncomfortable nose. For children, the dry air also increases their chances of nosebleeds. When a child has a nosebleed, parents often feel nervous and don’t know what to do. How did the nose bleed on its own without hitting or scratching it? 1, there are many small blood vessels (capillaries) in the nose, which are located within the very thin nasal mucosa, unlike other blood vessels that are usually buried under the thick skin and fat. 2, children’s upper respiratory tract and immune function is not yet mature, easy to have upper respiratory tract infections, nasal allergies, etc., which in turn cause nasal bleeding. Therefore, when stimulated, such as picking the nose, nasal foreign bodies, dry air, etc., the blood vessels can easily rupture and bleed. How to prevent nosebleeds? The common causes of nosebleeds in children are dry air, nose picking and nasal allergy. So parents can start with these three aspects of prevention. 1. Stop picking your nose Many children have the behavior of picking their nose. Whether out of habit or an itchy nose, this can damage the capillaries in the nasal cavity and lead to bleeding. Of course, this “indecent behavior” should be stopped even if there are no physical effects. If you find your child picking his nose, stop it quickly by telling him, “There are lots of bugs on your hands, be careful of bugs drilling your nose. If it is a baby, it may be difficult to stop it. On the one hand, parents can try to find out the cause of nose picking, such as colds, allergies, and then be related to treatment; on the other hand, if it is just a habitual action, then give him a toy or food to divert attention. 2, provide moist air Dry air will make the capillaries in the nasal cavity more likely to break, just as dry winters are more likely to make the skin cracked. In addition, in a dry environment, nasal secretions and various dirty things tend to form “boogers”, when the child will involuntarily pick his nose. Therefore, it is necessary to create a moist environment for your child. 3. Prevention of allergies Nasal allergy is also one of the common causes of nosebleeds in children. When the nose is allergic, capillaries are more likely to rupture and bleed, and children may pick their noses because of itchy noses, which can lead to ruptured blood vessels. Therefore, it is especially important to prevent allergies. The most important thing to prevent allergies is to “reduce exposure to allergens”. What can be done to keep children away from allergens? 1. Installing air filters or opening windows for ventilation can usually reduce allergens in the air; 2. Stay away from possible allergens and things that tend to accumulate dust, such as stuffed toys, pets and stuffed toys. 3, nosebleed nosebleeds, people are generally accustomed to tilt the head back, nostrils up, so that not only is not easy to stop the bleeding, backward posture will also make the nasal cavity has been out of the blood flow backward to the throat due to posture and gravity, will be swallowed into the esophagus and gastrointestinal, stimulating the gastrointestinal mucosa to produce discomfort or vomiting. When the amount of bleeding is large, it is also easy to suck and choke into the trachea and lungs, causing danger. The correct method: head slightly tilted forward, so that the blood has been discharged out of the nostrils, so as not to stay in the nasal cavity to interfere with the airflow of breathing. The bleeding can be stopped by placing a cotton pad in the nostril or by pinching both sides of the nose with your fingers and applying local pressure for 10-15 minutes. Most patients can use this method to effectively stop the bleeding, but if the bleeding is large or the nosebleed is not stopped after more than 10 minutes of compression, further disposal must be done at the hospital.
