Bacterial conjunctivitis may be accompanied by a localised yellow purulent discharge from the eye, which is noticeable in the morning, and can be treated with topical antibiotic eye drops and ointment. When a discharge is detected, it should be washed away with running water or saline or boric acid eye wash. Allergic conjunctivitis can be accompanied by itchy eyes. Most children also have allergic rhinitis, which can be treated with topical anti-allergy eye drops.
