Wen, male, 30 years old, works in Foshan, Guangdong. At the beginning of summer when watermelon was on the market, he ate half of a chilled watermelon after dinner and started to have a headache and fever in the middle of the night, a bad chill, body aches, sore throat, cough, diarrhea, and went to the local hospital after getting up. After the IV drip was finished that day, the symptoms did not abate, and that night the headache worsened and he was unable to sleep. Three days after the drip, the symptoms did not abate at all, so he was referred to a Chinese medicine practitioner, who diagnosed him as having a wind-temperature cold and prescribed mulberry leaf, chrysanthemum, silver flower, forsythia, burdock, thorny mustard, peppermint and other dispersing and relieving medicines. On the night of taking the medicine, the sore throat and itchy throat seemed to be alleviated, but the headache and diarrhea were not reduced and seemed to be aggravated, with diarrhea once every two hours on average. The next day, I took another dose of the medicine as prescribed by the doctor, but the symptoms remained the same. The patient was in pain and unable to work, so she sought medical advice from the author. The patient had a splitting headache, could not sleep, had fever and chills, was weak and achy, had a sore throat and itchy throat, had a cough, had a watery stool every two hours with undigested food inside, urinated as usual, had red and swollen tonsils like peaches on both sides, and had difficulty swallowing. The author believes that this disease is caused by a craving for cold and cold, watermelon is cold in nature and is an antidote to summer heat, but after chilling it becomes extremely cold, and after eating it, it damages the spleen and stomach yang qi, resulting in the influence of Wei-Yang, so that the external evil invades the surface and causes a cold; the middle jiao is damaged and the pivot is unfavorable, so that the phase fire does not descend and rises to the redness and pain of the throat and itching, so that the headache is splitting; the middle yang is deficient and the spleen qi does not rise, so that it cannot decompose the water and grain. This causes water and grain to go down together, resulting in diarrhea. This is a case of deficiency of Yang energy in the middle jiao and external sensation. Prescription: Radix et Rhizoma Polygoni 30g, Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae 15g, Rhizoma Atractylodes Macrocephala 15g, Radix Ginger 15g, Radix Glycyrrhiza Uralensis 15g. He was instructed to take the decoction that night. The next morning, he called to say that he had gone to bed after taking the medicine at night, and had fallen asleep peacefully at some point, and when he woke up, his symptoms were as if he had lost them, and he was still feeling slightly tired. In order to consolidate the effect, I was told to take one more dose of rice porridge to nourish myself. Subsequent feedback, after taking the medicine recovered as before, the body is as healthy as usual. Although this case is a cold, it is different from the general exopathic cold, which is caused by the damage of the middle Jiao and the deficiency of Wei-Yang. After referral to a TCM doctor, the former doctor treated the patient with wind-warm external sensation, and the application of dispersing medicine prompted the Yang energy to disperse, which aggravated the damage to the Yang energy itself, thus aggravating the symptoms such as headache and diarrhea. Treatment should capture the contradiction of insufficient yang qi in the middle jiao, unfavorable pivoting and phase fire not descending. On the one hand, the author uses Radix Rehmanniae, because on the one hand, while warming the middle Jiao, he warms the lower Jiao with Radix Rehmanniae, in order to encourage the lower Jiao phase fire to transform the earth of the middle Jiao; on the other hand, the warmth of the lower Jiao also helps the uptake of the phase fire of the upper reversal Wen, a 30-year-old man, works in Foshan, Guangdong.
