The treatment of acute Achilles tendon rupture usually depends on the age of the patient, the level of activity and the severity of the injury. Younger and more active patients, especially athletes and sports enthusiasts, are strongly advised to opt for surgery to repair a completely ruptured Achilles tendon, while older people prefer non-surgical treatment. Patients with chronic Achilles tendon rupture who have persistent pain, swelling or severe restriction of movement in the heel may need to undergo surgery.
