Maintenance of teeth during pregnancy

During pregnancy, continued dental care is especially important because hormonal changes often cause “pregnancy gingivitis”. This is a painful inflammation of the gum surface. Most of this gingivitis can be treated by taking care of the teeth and gaps. Unfortunately, pregnant women who suffer from this disease often do not clean their teeth well. Fear of pain or bleeding gums makes them afraid to touch the inflamed area when brushing their teeth. Gingivitis thus spreads and tartar and bacteria gradually start their destructive activities. This starts a vicious cycle: pain and inflammation grow, and the inflamed area becomes even more uncomfortable to touch. This cycle may lead to the decay of one tooth, or even more, which eventually has to be extracted. This vicious cycle can be broken by consistent adherence to oral hygiene.
