If a humeral stem fracture is combined with radial nerve injury, the doctor will treat the fracture along with aggressive management of the nerve injury. The surgeon will decide whether to surgically explore the radial nerve based on the location and severity of the patient’s fracture, the characteristics of the soft tissue injury, and the extent of the nerve injury. In most cases, a (closed) humeral stem fracture with radial nerve injury without an open wound will recover spontaneously. For a humeral stem fracture with radial nerve injury with an open wound, the surgeon will promptly perform surgical exploration and repair of the injured nerve.
