The tissues of the eye, including the eyelids and conjunctiva, can become inflamed by various microbial infections or non-microbial irritants followed by allergic reactions, or by exposure to the corresponding allergenic substances. All of these may cause an allergic reaction in the eye, resulting in red, swollen and itchy eyes.
